Bernie Lutchman: The Thinker

Pastor Bernie Lutchman at his ordainment

What do you think about? Is your mind preoccupied with matters and things of this earthly life, or does your thinking align with God’s? Here’s a good yardstick – Psalm 1:1-3: Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. But they delight in the law of the LORD, meditating on it day and night. They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do.(NLT)

(Verse 1 commands us not to listen to the world and its evil teachings. Too many Christians get caught up in nice sounding philosophies, psychology and other modern day theories, designed by the devil to deceive the faithful. Everything from mysticism to mixing pagan Eastern religions with Christianity, from Health and Wealth “Gospel” to overly Charismatic extra-Biblical teachings, should be AVOIDED AT ALL COSTS!

The wicked are not just those who are pagans, who worship the gods of the world or who do not believe in the Christ as the Unitarians do. The wicked are not just those who chant the name of Buddha or find a god in a monkey, but the wicked are those who remove all mentions of the Blood of Christ from Hymn books and their methodical prayer books. The wicked are those who get offended by a literal interpretation of the Bible. The wicked are those who go to a service at Christmas and Easter, pick a law to obey, break all the other ones, and then think they are “good enough” to get into Heaven when it is all over. The wicked are those politicians – both Federal and state, US Military chaplains, black robed judges and school districts, who rebuke, censor, disgrace, remove and dishonor our children, soldiers and people who claim the Name of Christ. WOE TO THEM! WOE TO THEM! Woe to those who also claim the Name of Christ but then refuse to stand up and be counted when His people are persecuted, so as not to offend pagan religions! Woe to them who have fellowship with the scoffers, sit with them or stand with them in political correctness! Woe is them on Judgment Day!

However, the best part is Verse 2: “but his delight is in the law of the Lord”. This is not talking about delighting only in the Ten Commandments or the 600 plus laws of the Old Testament, which no man can keep. What David encourages is a delight in the Full Counsel of the Word of God, in order to find the directions or the Road Map to Living Victoriously with Jesus, moment after moment, day after day. The Full Counsel is the entire 66 books of the Bible.

Verse 2 also says “and in His law, he meditates day and night”. Again, tying this into Psalm 27:4, meditating on the Word of God, day and night does not necessarily have to mean reading the physical Bible 24 hours per day. But praying or digesting the sweet scroll of Scripture in one’s mind when the office gets harsh, or the kids are noisy, or some painted up floozy in a short skirt walks by and men, remember your marriage vows….this is what He means. Mediate, ruminate, fill your plate….remember the Spiritual food you ate. Each life situation/application has a Scripture reference attached to it. God took care of it all, before the foundation of the World. Won’t you go to the Source?

Here is a nice analogy about processing or meditating on the Scriptures – a regular old milk cow has four stomachs. FOUR! Have you ever wondered how a brown cow, eating green grass, gives out white milk!! Well, when old Bessie grazes on the lush grass early in the morning, the meal is held in stomach number 1. She then finds a tree or just sits out in the open. Around 10am, she regurgitates the roughly chewed grass from stomach number 1 and constantly chews her cud until that paste is digested and run through the other 3 stomachs. She ruminates. Somewhere in the digestive process, with water involved, God turns all that green stuff into a white substance, taken from the female cow’s udders. Next time you drink a cold glass of skim milk, thank the Good Lord for how He made the cow which gives us this benefit! This is what happens when we meditate on His Word!

Briefly, Verse 3: “He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in its season and its leaf does not wither; and in whatever he does, he prospers.” My friends, plant yourselves firmly in Jesus. There are two kinds of Christians and only one is valid – the one who builds his life on the Rock of Christ. Do not drink of the wicked ways of the world. Feed on the Living Water of Christ. Do not go for tickle your ears, easy doctrine. Firm yourself in the Gospel. Do not cruise the wide six lane highway of the World. Fix your eyes upon Jesus, who is the One Narrow Way, the Truth and the Life. Do not compromise Biblical beliefs to get along. Focus on the Cross and stay there. This gives you roots. The stronger the roots, the better and sweeter the fruit…in and out of season!! These strong roots will, once in Christ, will never be allowed to wither and die. We will prosper because we are His and He is ours. Can you think of a promise better than this??!! If you do, prove it!

  1. I for one, need to meditate more on Scripture and worry less about things I won’t even likely remember 6 months from now….He gives me a lot to think about here…Lori

    1. Blessings to you Lori! What I am loving more and more about studying the Word, which comes more and more alive each time I read and dig into (or meditate) on it, is word study…first phrase by phrase and then “what does it mean”….I think this is what He is looking for – that we love His Word so much, that all of our spiritual hearts are stayed on Him – Abba Father through Christ the Lord!
